A Message from Chaplain Myers

Reclaiming Joy in Your Marriage

Lt. Brian Myers, Command Chaplain, NMCB 11Deuteronomy 24:5 states, “If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.”  Wow!  What a great verse if only that were true for most of our marriages in the military.  The reality is many of us get married and then are sent off on deployment.  For those who knew their spouse for a few years prior to joining the Navy will find that deployment can be really tough, regardless of preparation.  So what do we do to handle the hard and lonely days of deployment?

My suggestion this week is simple.  Stop talking about the areas that divide you as a couple: the bad decisions, the broken promises, and the heated conversations.  Rather, focus on the areas that you love about your spouse; the night you first met, your funny stories, your great vacations, your favorite movies, your children, and your faith.  Yes you are apart.  Yes it is hard.  Instead of allowing this deployment to defeat you, fight the urge to give in and Reclaim The Joy in Your Marriage!
