 ‘Out of the Darkness’

Lt. Brian Myers, Command Chaplain, NMCB 11Did you know that in the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes, claiming more than 38,000 lives each year?  It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute, with close to one million people attempting suicide annually.  Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 18-65, the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and individuals ages 65 and older account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths. This is a public health issue that does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status.  With all of that said, depression can grip a hold of anyone at any time.  Let’s work together as a battalion, as a family, spouses, and NMCB 11 supporters and walk to save lives this fall.  ‘Out of the Darkness’ is a national initiative to promote awareness.  This year find an event near you.  Go to the following websites or  At these sites you can organize and start your own event or join another group walking 3 to 5 miles to raise support and awareness for suicide prevention.   After all, we cannot do the mission without people.  We need every Seabee and family member to stay safe and healthy.  If you need help or someone to talk with make an appointment with FFSC, a local medical provider, or a Chaplain. For additional resources please visit the following Chaplain Care website  You can also call 1-855-628-9311 or text for 24 hour FREE Chaplain Support.
