Sexual Assault Month: And the Chaplains Role

Hello again this is a message from your command Chaplain LTJG Brian Myers. This week I would like to bring to your attention a rather serious matter.  This month is sexual assault awareness month, or SAAM. SAAM is designed to raise awareness and promote the prevention of sexual violence through the use of special events and public education.  As you receive training this week I encourage you to take this matter seriously.

If you are assigned to a DET site that is not with main body, I want to assure you that you have a victim advocate who can help assist you if you need help with reporting.  Maybe you know of someone who has told you about a situation, but you do not know how to advise about reporting.  If this is you please check out the following website: http://www.myduty.mil/, in addition please contact your DET sites victim advocate for clarification in this matter. If you do not want to talk with someone within the command please check out the following website: https://www.safehelpline.org/

The main point that I want stress during this article is to give you a point of contact in the case you need advice or counsel when dealing with sexual assault.  If you need to reach me via email please contact your command Chaplain at brian.myers@afg.usmc.mil.  Chaplains have privileged communication, and can offer you the tools that you need to those who are struggling with guilt, shame, fear, or mistrust of the system. As your command Chaplain I can assist you in understanding how to report an issue, or where to look for help, as well as provide healing from a sexual assault event that happened in the past.  I personally wanted to write this article to assure you that your command cares about you, and wants to help.

This week’s Scripture focus comes from 2 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.”

Have a Blessed week Lucky 11, stay positive, and look out for your fellow Seabee!
