HOLIDAY INTERVIEWS

BUCA John E. Harris

“Getting to see and hang out with my family is my favorite part of this season. Before I joined, it was getting presents. But now that I’m in the NAVY, it’s being with them.  My father, brothers and I will be dressing up in our uniforms for pictures this year. My dad, who is a retired Diver, will wear his old uniform. My brother, a Fire Controlman, will wear his NWUs. My other brother, a Steel Worker, will wear his CUUs and I will wear my Type IIIs. In another picture, we will all wear our Dress Blues.” – BUCA John E. Harris – Port Huron, MI

“Most of our holidays are based in Catholicism. Christmas is a big one. A lot of traditional church celebrations go on this season. People go caroling. They give fruit punch and little bags of Christmas candy. We have this tradition where a family receives a baby Jesus and they host the Christmas caroling. They lay the baby to rest in the same house at the end of caroling every night. It’s like a whole play every night. People get dressed up for it. This goes on for twelve days. They close the streets down. If your house gets to do that it’s an honor. Every family does it different. People there might not know who you are but they treat you as family. It’s one of the best experiences. People get so creative with it. I miss it a lot.” – BUCN Juan Hernandez Vazquez – Waco, TX

“We have Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve and go to church on Christmas morning. We draw names; whoever you get that’s who you buy a gift for. Christmas day – I’m all over the place. Those few days are gonna’ be pretty crazy with seeing people. We’ll probably have a big party eventually.”  – BUCN Thibodeau

“As a child and when I was a teenager our family would go caroling with friends from church.  It really brings the spirit of Christmas.  We always go to church and celebrate the birth of our savior.  The season is about the spirit of giving and sharing.  I look forward to spending time with my In-Laws and attending church with them.” – BMC (SW/AW) Roosel H. “We always eat together.  We have a family breakfast Christmas morning then at night we eat dinner at a family member’s house.  Being in the military, you’re not always able to spend time with your family so you have to take advantage of it when you can.  That’s really what I look forward to the most.  The only plans we make are to attend church.  Other than that, I just like to spend time with them.” –  GM2 (SCW) Brian Woo – Washington, D.C.
