The CCAD Micronesia Seabees deployed from Gulfport, Mississippi in August 2016 to Kosrae, Federal States of Micronesia (FSM) for 6 months to execute humanitarian civic assistance construction projects, host nation construction apprentice training, and medical community relation (COMREL) support in order to increase the country’s infrastructure capacity, strengthen the US relationship with FSM, and develop grassroots relationships with the local populace.

The CCAD made significant progress throughout the month of December on the new health clinic they are building in the remote village of Walung. Even though NMCB 11’s Seabees are hard at work and missing their families back home, they took the time to celebrate the holidays with the people of Kosrae.

“It has been a little rough being away from home for the holidays, but my fellow Seabees and the Kosraean people are like my other family half way around the world,” said Builder 2nd Class (SCW) Justin Emerson, Crew Leader for the Walung clinic project.

The 2016 holiday season was a special one for Kosrae. Every four years Kosraeans from all over the world come back home for Christmas celebrations that last several weeks. Seabees made the most of this special opportunity by participating in local holiday celebrations in both the villages of Walung and Tanfunsak. In Walung the CCAD celebrated with local youth, recording a combined Holiday Shout-out video for CCAD family members back home and handing out candy canes to all the local children. On the December 27th, the village of Tafunsak hosted the formal Christmas celebration for the entire island. The Seabees immersed themselves in the local culture, watching different families from all the villages march and sing all day to celebrate the holiday season.
